At the Geneva Motor Show in 2008, BMW unveiled the X5 EfficientDynamics concept, a hybrid diesel variant of the BMW X5 luxury SUV. Last week, BMW announced that it's bringing a new concept vehicle to Frankfurt this September -- a vehicle that will take the EfficientDynamics concept at least one step further, if not more. Not only is this model expected to employ sustainably derived materials in its construction, but rumor has it that the vehicle will also be powered by an electric motor.

This year has seen a number of new and announced model-name changes from Mercedes-Benz, including the new E-Class Coupe, which takes the place of the CLK. Likewise, the new S-Class Coupe will replace the CL as of the 2011 model year.

The spy shots, captured by the sleuths at Motor Authority, reveal a car already well into the development and testing process. The grille is more pronounced and the headlights get the new corporate look along with LED accents.

LEDs feature at the rear as well, along with a redesigned rear fascia and new exhaust tips. Side repeater lamps and side mirrors are also on the expected update list.

With bankruptcy, a weak economy and an uncertain future to overcome, General Motors is nonetheless planning for success with its Chevrolet Cruze sedan. Built on the front-wheel drive Delta II platform, the Cruze won't likely see North American streets until 2010. But already Buick engineers are hard at work building a compact luxury car on the Cruze platform.

The Buick version won't be available until 2012 at best, however, so there is still much work and waiting to be done. Sharing a platform and powertrain options with the Cruze and 2010 Opel Astra will help move things forward while keeping costs under control, but there are several...
