The 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class has been on the drawing boards for a while--and now, the German automaker is running tests on prototypes spotted by the spy photographers over at Motor Authority.

The new ML-Class sport-ute is due to arrive in 2011 as a 2012 model. These first photos of test mules show what could be a slightly shorter body, on an unchanged wheelbase. The ML-Class is expected to remain a five-seater, while Mercedes continues to offer a seven-passenger GL-Class ute and continues to debate the future of its six-passenger R-Class crossover.

It's still weeks away from an official reveal in photos and in the flesh at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show, but Mercedes-Benz has published dozens of photos of its 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar already--mostly, to show off the gullwing sportscar's long-nose proportions and its retro-flair interior.

This year has seen a number of new and announced model-name changes from Mercedes-Benz, including the new E-Class Coupe, which takes the place of the CLK. Likewise, the new S-Class Coupe will replace the CL as of the 2011 model year.

The spy shots, captured by the sleuths at Motor Authority, reveal a car already well into the development and testing process. The grille is more pronounced and the headlights get the new corporate look along with LED accents.

LEDs feature at the rear as well, along with a redesigned rear fascia and new exhaust tips. Side repeater lamps and side mirrors are also on the expected update list.
