Chrysler last year tried to sell its Viper sports car—production facilities, tooling, and all—and failed. But the Viper isn't dead yet. If the rumors are right, the Viper might be very much alive in the company's future-product plans—and getting its own Ferrari/Maserati-derived engine.

What once was old is new again -- and we're not just talking about GM's beloved Bob Lutz, who was lured out of retirement on Friday  to serve as the company's "vice chairman responsible for all creative elements of products and customer relationships". No, we're also referring to the Pontiac G8 and the Dodge Viper, which had been cruising toward the executioner's block but have now been given a reprieve. Every Enthusiast's Dream: Own Viper Motors

As we reported last month (Down The Snake Hole), Chrysler hasn't had an easy time finding a buyer for their Viper brand. That stuck me as kind of odd, because everybody in the auto nation knows that every true enthusiasts and rich guy, sooner or later, dreams about having their own car company.

Now AutoWeek is filling in some of the backstory on what was going on behind the scenes regarding the potential sale of the Viper brand. Why do I care, because the 2009 Dodge Viper is an elemental performance car that I'd hate to see go away.
